Why Canggu Is the Right Place to Start

Bali has dozens of surf breaks, and they're not all equal for a first-timer. The breaks we use for this camp -- Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Old Man's -- are sandy-bottom beach breaks: the wave rolls in and breaks over soft sand close to shore. If you fall, which you will, you fall onto sand in shallow water, not coral.

That matters because a lot of Bali's most famous surf is the opposite: further south around the Bukit Peninsula near Uluwatu, the breaks are sharp coral reef breaks -- faster, more powerful, and genuinely dangerous for someone who's never surfed. Those waves are what experienced surfers travel to Bali for. They're a bad place to learn.

Canggu's gentler, forgiving whitewash is specifically why we run our beginner curriculum here instead. You get real Bali surf, real progression, and a sandy margin for error while you learn.

From Zero to Riding Waves

A typical beginner progression over a 5-7 day package.

Day 1

Safety & land drills

Water safety briefing, surf etiquette, and pop-up practice on the sand before you ever paddle out -- so the first time you're in the water, your body already knows the motion.

Day 1-2

Paddling & whitewash

Paddling technique and catching whitewash (broken, foamy waves) lying down, then on your knees, building the balance and timing you need to stand.

Day 2-3

Standing up

Your first stand-up attempts in the whitewash, close to shore in shallow, sandy water. Most beginners stand up for the first time somewhere in this window.

Day 4-5

Riding & steering

Linking the pop-up to actually riding the wave in, basic steering with your feet and weight, and starting to read which waves are worth catching.

Day 6-7

First green waves

For campers on the 7-day package, this is where we start pushing past the whitewash toward catching unbroken ("green") waves with instructor support.

Safety First, On Sand Before Water

Every beginner starts on the sand, not in the water. We cover rip-current awareness, how to read the whitewash, right-of-way etiquette, and the pop-up motion itself -- all before you paddle out for the first time. Group sizes are kept small so your instructor can actually watch you catch each wave, not just point you at the ocean.

It sounds slower than just jumping straight in, but it's the reason most of our complete-beginner campers are standing up within their first one or two days.

Which Package Should a Beginner Book?

5-Day Surf Camp — minimum recommended

Enough time to go from land drills to riding whitewash consistently. A solid taster if your trip is short.

Rp 7.500.000 (~$475)

7-Day Surf Camp — ideal for beginners

The extra days give you a buffer for an off day and time to push toward your first green waves, not just whitewash.

Complete Beginners, Real Results

“I'd never even touched a surfboard and was genuinely nervous. The land drills on day one made such a difference -- by the time I was in the water my body already knew what to do. Stood up on day 2.”

“I'm 46 and not particularly athletic, and I was worried I'd be the slow one in the group. The instructor paced everything to me specifically -- never felt rushed or out of my depth.”

Beginner FAQ

I've genuinely never stood on a board before -- is this camp for me?

Yes -- most of our campers arrive as complete beginners. The whole first day is land drills and whitewash paddling specifically so your first time standing happens in a controlled, shallow, forgiving environment, not thrown into open water.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need to be a comfortable, confident swimmer, but not an athlete -- beginner sessions happen in shallow whitewash close to shore, not out past the break. Tell us about your swimming confidence when you book so we can plan accordingly.

Why is Canggu better for beginners than other parts of Bali?

Canggu's breaks -- Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Old Man's -- are sandy-bottom beach breaks: the wave breaks over soft sand, not sharp coral. Further south around the Bukit Peninsula near Uluwatu, many of Bali's famous breaks are reef breaks, which are faster, shallower over coral, and much less forgiving for a first-timer. Canggu's gentler, sand-bottom whitewash is specifically why we base our beginner camp here.

What's the minimum age for the beginner camp?

Most beginner campers are roughly 12 and up. Message us the age of anyone younger and we'll let you know honestly whether it's a good fit.

What if I'm older or not particularly fit?

Plenty of our beginner campers are in their 40s, 50s and beyond -- surfing doesn't require elite fitness, just reasonable mobility and swimming comfort. Let us know about any injuries or conditions so your instructor can adjust the pace.

What gear do I need to bring?

Just swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen and a towel -- boards, rash guards and leg ropes are all provided and sized to you. If you already own a rash guard or booties you're welcome to bring them, but they're not required on Canggu's sandy breaks.
